Enrichment seen as thriving in Panama as Martinelli campaign slogan boomerangs
“They [politicians] arrive with empty pockets and leave millionaires" was the campaign slogan of Ricardo Martinelli before he won Panama’s presidency in 2009.
In his inaugural speech, on July 2, that year he - promised that his government might sometimes slip up, but their hands would not be in the till.
But a survey shows that 25 percent of respondents believe that corruption in Panama has declined, while 28 percent believed it to have increased, while 44.4 percent are convinced that corruption has remained the same in the two years the government has been in office.
