Era of the sun begins today in the Mayan calendar with boost for tourism in Guatemala

Today marks the 13th "baktun", a period of 400 years in the Mayan calendar known as the era of the sun.

The new era has generated all manner of speculation throughout the world, and Guatemala aims to cash in on it by drawing tourism with a focus on Mayan culture.

The nation's tourism chamber reckons that toiurism arrivals are likely to increase by some 8 percent next year as a result.
