Extorsion rackets burst into conflict in El Salvador

Tension between the government of El Salvador and the business sector has burst into open conflict over extortion by the country’s criminal gangs.

A senior government official, Roberto Lorenzana, said that the companies are failing to pay their taxes. Instead they are paying protection money to the gangs, he said. the companies are outraged by the claim.
