Fight brewing over Darién oil development in Panama. Battle lines are being drawn between developers and environmentalists

Wednesday, September 14, 2011

With a projected 900 million barrels of oil under the sea on land and off Panama’s Darién coast, battle lines are already being drawn between developers and environmentalists.

The executive director of the National Association for the Conservation of Nature, Alida Spadafora, said that it is necessary to "analyze the impact that oil exploitation would have on the Darién region."

She said that not only are we talking about protected and unprotected forests but also of rivers and water quality. "We must seek the greatest benefit to the Darién and the country."
