Go slow on port tender, US tells El Salvador

It would be a big mistake to launch a tender soon for the concession of the port of La Unión, the US embassy told the Salvadoran government.

The port authority, Nelson Vanegas, has said that the tender would be announced next week. La Unión was built in 2008 and has been a white elephant ever since.

In a statement the embassy said that it was concerned about the absence of transparency over plans for the tender, and any clear strategy to achieve the goal of a concession.
