Guatemala central bank governor unfazed by Europe’s crisis

As Guatemala prepares for a review of its economy, Edgar Barquín, the central bank governor, is optimistic.

“The Congress has to take the first step by passing the laws against tax avoidance and elimination of secrecy surrounding bank accounts,” he said.

Europe’s debt crisis and the slowdown in the United States could affect Guatemala’s prospects, he admitted. But “we reckon the impact won’t be too severe next year.”
