Guatemala earns $4.8 billion a year from remittances

Guatemala received 9 percent more remittances during 2012, compared to 2011, according to the country's central bank, known as Banguat.


Remittances last year totaled $4.8 billion, and along with tourism and exports, helped the country's economy grow 3 percent.


This year, remittances are expected to grow 6 percent, and for the first time reach $5 billion or more.
