Guatemala: Electrifying

Friday, June 11, 2010

Spanish energy giant Unión Fenosa has submitted offers to Guatemala's mining and energy ministry, for the development of four major hydro-electric projects, with total capacity of more than 300 MW, equivalent to one quarter of the country's current demand.

Total investment in the projects would be $608 million.

Energy producers in Guatemala, as well as other Central American countries, will in addition be able to export excess output via the regional energy grid, scheduled for completion next year. Besides Guatemala, Costa Rica and Honduras are the countries in the region with the greatest potential for increased hydro generation.
