Guatemala: get tough

Wednesday, September 21, 2011

WHAT? The clear winner in the first round of elections the week before last, ex general Otto Pérez Molina is likely to become Guatemala's next president, following a run-off vote to be held on November 6.

WHY? Pérez is perceived as the leader best able to lead the fight against violent crime, the biggest concern of Guatemalans.

NEXT? Young people often turn to crime, because Guatemala doesn’t create enough jobs. Widespread violence discourages many businesses from investing in Guatemala, and many tourists from visiting, which in turn means fewer jobs. Pérez’ challenge is to break the vicious circle.
