The growing purchasing power of Guatemala’s provincial cities are luring business chains and shopping malls.

The population of Huehuetenango, for example, has quadrupled in the last 50 years, spurring the growth of leading retails chains and restaurants.

Remittances from emigrants are a major factor in improving the population’s purchasing power in many of the medium-sized cities.
