Guatemala seeks talks with US over labor dispute

Tuesday, August 3, 2010

The Guatemalan government rejected US accusations that it violated the labor provisions of the Cafta free-trade agreement, but said it was open to talks with Washington to resolve the dispute.

Washington said last week it would file a formal complaint against Guatemala that could potentially lead to hefty fines to force it to improve enforcement of its own labor laws.

"There is protection for unions in the constitution and in the labor code," Deputy Labor Minister Mario Illescas said in an interview.
