Guatemala unable to meet Millennium Challenge on extreme poverty

Friday, September 17, 2010

Guatemala will not be able to reduce poverty levels by at least 50 percent, as established by the Millennium Challenge of the United Nations for 2015.

“We are well short of reaching the target to reduce extreme poverty,” said Karin Slowing, secretary of economic planning at the president’s office. She blamed structural problems and natural disasters.

Slowing said that extreme poverty was reduced by only 2.9 percent between 1990 and 2006.
