Guatemalan coffee exports slowed by heavy rains and landslides

Tuesday, September 7, 2010

Guatemala's high-quality coffee crop was not damaged by deadly landslides caused by heavy rains this weekend, but some coffee exports will be slowed by road damage.

At least 44 people were killed after mountainsides collapsed and rivers burst their banks on Saturday and Sunday, but most of the damage was in the western part of the country away from coffee fields.

But damaged infrastructure could jack up transport costs for exporters by 15 to 20 percent.
