Guatemalan to lose one million tons of sugarcane as a result of flooding

Monday, September 13, 2010

Guatemala’s 2010-2011 sugar harvest will fall by 5 percent due to damage caused by 12,000 hectares caused by heavy rainfall in recent weeks.

“We reckon that the rains have lost us more than a million tons of cane,” said the general manager of the cane growers’ association.

The losses will hit exports once domestic supplies have been assured. Between November 1 last year till September 10 this year, Guatemala earned $668 million in sugar exports.
