Guatemalans spent $2.4 billion in telecommunications, boosted by 15 percent rise in mobiles

Guatemala reached 20.7 million mobile phone users in December, according to the country's telecommunications authority.

The number represents a 14.6 percent growth compared to 2010. The leading operator in the country is Tigo, part of Sweden's Millicom, which competes against Claro, of Mexico's América Móvil and Movistar, of pain's Telefónica.

Guatemalans spent $2.4 billion in telecommunications last year, of which 69 percent was in mobile phone services, according to Pyramid Research.
