Hague gives islands to Colombia and sea to Nicaragua

The International Court of Justice at The Hague ruled yesterday that a group of seven islands in the Caribbean belonged to Colombia and not Nicaragua.

The decision also means that Nicaragua will have sovereignty over the sea connecting the islands, a decision which the Colombian government was not pleased with.

The sovereignty of the waters will allow Nicaragua to exploit new fishing rights, as well as explore for possible oil wells.
