Health of Hugo Chavez sparks concern for Nicaraguan beef exporting authority

Tuesday, March 6, 2012

Nicaragua's beef exporting authority, Canicarne, has shown concern for the health of the Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez and fears the country's recent beef export boom could be at risk.

Chavez's health may affect exports to Venezuela, which account for 35 percent of Nicaragua's beef exports, said Onel Pérez, president of Canicarne.

However, Nicaragua will benefit from reduced beef production in the United States, which is likely to drive prices up by 10 percent this year.
