Heavy rainfall causes collapse of Panama Canal’s Centenario Bridge

Monday, December 13, 2010

A large portion of the Centenario Bridge over the Panama Canal collapsed on Saturday.

One of two structures that span the historic waterway, the Centenario inaugurated less than a decade ago collapsed when the side of a hill onto which the bridge is anchored lost a large portion of land because of excessive rain water.

The rain has caused ten deaths and created over five thousand homeless people in the last week due to rising floodwaters.
