Honduran hydro project ends in anger

Monday, January 28, 2019

Amid protests, strikes and blockades by local residents, the Patuca III hydroelectric dam in Honduras, cannot be completed. China's Sinohydro, which is in charge of the project, refused to clear trees and other vegetation that could give access to the dam but said that the work formed no part of the contract.

Meanwhile, arbitration is under way by the International Chamber of Commerce in order to resolve the crisis.

The problem could spell a catastrophe for the state power utility, the ENEE, which is due to pay $530 million in a loan for the project that was granted by the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China.
