Honduras: Cabinet shake-up

WHAT? President Porfirio Lobo last week fired his security minister, Oscar Alvarez, supposedly for not making Honduras more secure, along with foreign minister Mario Canahuati.

WHY? Lobo wants to weaken both men as 2014 potential presidential candidates, since he has already thrown indicated support for Juan Orlando Hernandez, current Speaker of the Congress.

WHATS NEXT? Hernandez supports a crackdown on crime, which polls regularly say is the country’s biggest problem. On the other hand, some Hondurans fear that Hernandez would not take an equally hard line on corruption.
