Honduras claims crown as leading Central American coffee producer and aims for more

Honduras this year became the leading coffee producer in Central America with an output of 5.2 million 46-kilogram bags, said Mario Ordóñez, head of the nation's coffee institute, Ihcafé.

Ordóñez said that the recent heavy rains in Central America made little impact on the coffee planatations themselves but communications were severely damaged.

The current 2011-2012 coffee harvest, which has already begun, is expected to produce 5.4 million bags.
