Honduras coffee seen losing competitiveness

Monday, May 5, 2014

Honduras could lose some 2 million coffee quintals worth $60 million if the government approves a law that aims to keep $5 for each 4 pounds of exportable quintal, the country's coffee association said.

The aim of the law is to create a fund to reactivate coffee growing activities in land affected by the coffee rust fungus.

But the law makes Honduras less competitive in the international coffee market, said Omar Acosta, president of the coffee association.
