Honduras expects boost in coffee output spurred by higher prices

Friday, September 3, 2010

Honduras will produce 6.4 percent more coffee in the upcoming 2010-11 season as farmers, spurred on by high prices, buy more fertilizers and expand their coffee growing land, the head of the national coffee association said.

Honduras sees production at 3.83 million 60-bags of coffee compared with the 3.6 million produced in 2009-10.

Honduras will export between 3.37 million and 3.45 million bags of coffee next season, which begins in October.

In the 2009-10 coffee year coming to a close, Central America's No. 2 coffee producer exported between 3.14 million and 3.22 million 60-kg bags of coffee.
