Honduras eyes $300 million exports in African palm

An increasing number of Honduran farmers are turning to African palm, as market prices of more traditional products such as coffee, cattle and milk make them less profitable.

Palm could soon become one of the country's most important crops, at a similar level to coffee, and this year could generate $300 million in exports, said Ramón Pérez, president of Honduras's palm producers' federation.

Since 2006, the number of palm farmers has doubled, going from 3,000 in 2006, to 7,000 last year, said Pérez.
