Honduras needs to import 100,000 coffee pickers from El Salvador and Nicaragua

Thursday, January 5, 2012

At least 100,000 coffee pickers will have to be imported to Honduras this year from El Salvador and Nicaragua.

Guillermo Zaldívar, a leader of the Honduran coffee producers, bemoans the need to import workers at a time when about two million people are unemployed in Honduras.

The coffee harvest employs about one million people, but the current harvest will be a large one. Some 1.1 million pickers will be needed.
