Honduras sugar industry hit by peasant land grabs
Thursday, August 2, 2012
Frequent land seizures by peasants, followed by evictions by the police are causing a severe problem to the sugar industry in Honduras.
Some 600,000 quintals will be lost to the 2012/2013 harvest if the land grabs continue in estates run by Azucarera del Norte, Azunosa, and Compañía Azucarera Hondureña.
In finance terms, the seizures are costing millions of dollars in losses to the companies.
