Honduras urged to wrap up its coffee for supermarket shelves
Tuesday, June 19, 2018
Honduras is Central America’s leading coffee producer, and the fifth in the world, but this year it has been dealt a severe blow by international commodity markets.
Honduras has been growing and exporting much more coffee this year but is earning 14 percent less. The $1 billion earned in coffee exports last year will fall far short of what the current crop can achieve.
Which is why, Fosdeh, the social forum on the Honduran debt, is urging coffee producers to add value to their product. Instead of shipping coffee in bulk to Europe, for example, the coffee could be toasted and wrapped in packages for supermarket shelves, as do other producers, such as Colombia.
