ICE says it will keep Costa Rica’s GSM network though its days may be numbered

Thursday, June 9, 2011

The GSM network in Costa Rica has its days numbered despite the announcement by the Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE) to keep it live.

ICE says the decision is to avoid overwhelming the 3G network.

The GSM network has a capacity of up to two million users. If ICE were to turn off the network, it would mean moving almost one million current GSM customers to the 3G network.
