Impact from Panama Canal expansion is focus of US forum in Long Beach

Tuesday, October 5, 2010

It's perhaps the biggest economic question - and potential threat - that Long Beach and its neighboring cities have faced in decades.

The Panama Canal is midway through the biggest expansion in its 100-year history, a $5.25 billion renovation designed to accommodate new generations of mega ships and tankers currently unable to squeeze through the aging waterway.

Canal expansion and its impact in Southern California are the topics of a forum Wednesday evening at Cal State Long Beach titled "Panama Canal Expansion: The Battle for Jobs and Cargo."
