Indigenous groups thwart alternative energy plans

The quest for alternative energy sources in Central America faces resistance from indigenous groups.

Costa Rica, Panama and Guatemala are making progress in major hydroelectric projects but indigenous groups are claiming that the dams will inundate their lands.

However, Honduras, Nicaragua and El Salvador are undertaking major hydroelectric projects and others in geothermal and wind power, without any social or legal impediments to their progress.
