Infrastructure causes friction in China-Costa Rica ties

Large infrastructure projects have become a headache in China and Costa Rica's bilateral relations.

The latest project to come under scrutiny is a 107-kilometer highway connecting to the port of Limón, after opposition showed the company in charge of the project, China's Harbour Engineering Company, is in several world organizations' black lists due to unfulfillment of contracts.

It comes just months after an oil refinery, valued at $1.3 billion, was paused after authorities found inconsistencies in the project's feasibility studies, as well as breaches to the contract.
