Intense heat ruins basic crops in El Salvador and Nicaragua

Tuesday, July 24, 2018

More than a month of drought and intense heat -- a phenomenon known as "la canícula" -- has ruined crops in part of the countryside of El Salvador and Guatemala.

Farmers are hoping for aid from their governments  as compensation for crop losses and the debts that were incurred.

Meanwhile, wholesale prices of beans and corn have surged by as much as 40 percent.
