Irish-owned Digicel profits exceed $1 million mark

Increased smart-phone usage in Central America and the Caribbean has helped boost pre-tax earnings at Digicel pass the $1 billion mark for the first time.

Digicel, which is based in Jamaica is owned by the Irish tycoon Denis O’Brien. It has a presence across Central America, the Caribbean and southern Pacific/Oceania regions.

The company boosted subscriber numbers by 27 percent, to 12.8 million people, with total revenues, for the 12 months to the end of March, rising by 14 percent, to $2.54 billion.
