Juan Carlos Varela elected President of Panama

Panamanian vice president Juan Carlos Varela, of the Panameñista party, won the country's presidential elections on Sunday.

With 60 percent of the votes counted, Varela took 39 percent, while his closest rival, José Domingo Arias, took 32 percent.

Varela's win came as a surprise after poll prior to the elections showed a very tight race between Arias and Varela, with some polls showing preference for Arias.
