Many service-station brands and eight importers fight it out in Guatemala gasoline war

Thursday, January 19, 2012

Motorists in Guatemala are noting growing competition among gasoline retailers, with some small brands that are beginning to make their presence felt.

One of the newcomers is Pacific Oil, which launched its tenth service station this week. Pacific joins a market in which eight importers supply a network of more than 1,250 service stations.

But the market continues to be dominated by Shell, which was acquired in 2008 by the Unopetrol chain, a unit of Honduras-based Grupo Terra.
