Mexico's gasoline 'war' reaps toll of 89 lives

Monday, January 21, 2019

The death toll rose fo 89 in the explosion in the central state of Hidalgo caused by spillage from a pipeline apparently caused by gasoline thieves.

Most of the dead were people who lived nearby the spillage and took jerrycans to grab as much gasoline as they could. Gasoline in the area was scarce because of a government offensive against fuel thieves.

Critics of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador have accused him of a badly planned strategy.
