Miners drive major surge in Panama power generation

Wednesday, October 16, 2019

Maximum power generation demand in Panama is forecast to grow nearly 60 percent in the coming decades, driven partly by mining activity.

In its just-released 2020-40 indicative demand report, the national dispatch center pegs offtake by 2040 at 3,086MW compared with 1,961MW recorded this August. One major offtaker will be Minera Panamá’s Cobre Panamá project, a $6.7 billion phased-in open-pit copper development, which is he largest private investment in Panama’s history, reports BN Américas.
