The new Honduran airport will start modestly, with just four jetways in the initial phase. However, the project should grow rapidly, with the likelihood that it becomes the main airport of Tegucigalpa, the capital.

The project involves the expansion of the facilities of Palmerola, located near the town of Comayagua, 75 kilometers northwest of Tegucigalpa.

Palmerola will have runways long enough to receive the world’s biggest airplanes, arriving direct not only from Europe but also Asia.

Interairports, the Honduran company which operates the country’s four other international airports, confirmed that the project will be ready at the end of 2013, and involve investments of about $100 million.

In addition, President Porfirio Lobo announced that the country will build a four-lane highway between Palmerola and Tegucigalpa. The capital’s current airport, Tocontín, is located in the center of the city, with no possibility of expanding.
