Nicaragua aims for dream rival to Panama Canal

Nicaragua could finally build its inter-oceanic canal, after President Daniel Ortega sent the project to be approved by Congress.

The project, however, has raised tensions with neighboring Costa Rica because much of the canal would follow the course of the San Juan river, which has been in a territorial dispute between the two nations for decades.

Ortega asked for the approval and support from the heads of the Venezuela-led Bolivarian Alliance, after proving the project's economic potential.
