Nicaragua forecasts 16 percent drop in coffee crop

Thursday, January 10, 2013

Nicaragua is expected to produce 1.6 million 60-kg bags of coffee in the 2012-2013 harvest, which runs from October to September.

The figure shows a drop of 16 percent from 1.9 million produced in 2011-2012, said the sales executive of the Nicaraguan division of the Mercon Coffee Corporation, John Gardina.

He added that the 2011-2012 harvest yielded more than previously thought. The national coffee council Conacafé pegged 2011-2012 production at 1.7 million bags and sees current season production falling to 1.53 million.
