Nicaragua has waiting list for mega-projects

The inter-oceanic canal, which would require a $30 billion investment, is not the only mega-project in Nicaragua.

At least two more are on the waiting list. One is an oil refinery, waiting for Venezuelan aid, and the other is a deep-water port in Monkey Point, on the Atlantic coast, which would also include a railway system connecting to the Pacific.

These projects have divided public and academic opinion. Some say Monkey Point would be vital to boost the country's trade. Others suggest the government should develop the internal market.
