Nicaragua hydro mega-project looks doomed

Tuesday, April 12, 2016

Following five years of delays, the political crisis in Brazil and the corruption scandals there may have dealt the final blow to Nicaragua’s energy megaproject, the Tumarin hydro scheme.

The Queiroz Galvão construction firm is leaving the country, its funding sources affected by the Brazilian political crisis. The firm, together with the Brazilian state company Eletrobras owns 90 percent of the Nicaraguan Hydroelectric Center, the company behind Tumarín.
