Nicaragua on brink of losing aid from Washington

Nicaragua's presidential adviser on foreign investment, Alvaro Baltodano, asked the United States to strengthen its economic ties with the rest of the countries in the Americas.

It was a positive suggestion, made during a business conference in Washington, by a high-ranking official of a country that has maintained a sometimes tense relationship with the US.

The underlying issue, however, is that Washington states that the waiver it has given Nicaragua on aid is on the verge of being cancelled. The reason, say Washington representatives, is that Nicaragua needs to raise its standards on human rights and democracy.
