Nicaragua: President Ortega, again

Thursday, October 20, 2011

WHAT? Daniel Ortega is almost certain to be re elected on November 6, most likely with at least a 50% majority. If so, it will be the first time since Violeta Chamorro in 1990, that an incumbent has won in the first round, let with at least half of the vote.

WHY? During the past five years, Ortega, a self-proclaimed socialist, has let the private sector prosper. Foreign investment is up, along with tourism. More people have jobs.

WHAT'S NEXT? Ortega expects little interference with the right of the Sandinista party to be supreme in the political sphere. The risk is that with another electoral victory, he will use his power to limit freedom of expression.
