Nicaragua to compensate Costa Rica over damage

Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega says his country will compensate Costa Rica for environmental damage caused when Nicaraguan military forces occupied disputed territory in the neighbouring nation.

The payment is the result of a ruling last year by the International Court at The Hague, Netherlands, favouring Costa Rica's sovereignty over the river island of Portillos and finding that Nicaragua had violated its territory along the Caribbean coast.
