Nicaragua to expand green energy production

Monday, January 27, 2014

Nicaragua expects to generate an average of 54 percent of its electricity from renewable sources by the end of this year, the Energy and Mines Ministry said.

Nicaragua produced more electricity from renewable sources than from conventional energy sources in 2013 for the first time, with renewables accounting for an average of 51 percent on an annualized basis, compared to 41 percent in 2012.

Nicaragua has set a goal of generating 80 percent of its electricity from renewable sources by 2018, with a target of 90 percent set for 2020, the Ministry said.
