Nicaraguan coffee production plunges 83 percent
Monday, December 2, 2013
Nicaraguan coffee growers produced 83 percent less quintals, 45-kilo bags, in October, the first month of the 2013-2014 harvest.
The figure represents a production of 3,764 quintals, according to data from the country's exports authority, Cetrex.
A large proportion of Nicaraguan coffee workers are migrating to Costa Rica, a situation which has created uncertainty in the sector, said José Ángel Buitrago, head of the Nicaraguan coffee exporters' association.
