North American fruit industry hit by Baja strike

Tuesday, March 31, 2015

It’s peak strawberry season in northwest Mexico, but fields and greenhouses were deserted last week during the first farm workers’ strike in the region in decades and salary negotiations foundered at the table.

Tens of thousands of workers picking fruits and vegetables for 10 to 12 hours a day, seven days a week, make an average of about $10 a day, and they say they haven’t had a raise in at least a decade.
