Oil behind Costa Rica-Nicaragua dispute

Nicaragua’s decision to dispute Costa Rica’s sovereignty over the Bolaños island could be little more than nationalist posturing ahead of the Nicaraguan elections in November, according to Manuel González, the Costa Rican foreign minister.

But there are potential deposits of oil and natural gas in the northern Pacific Coast of Costa Rica where the borders are scarcely defined.
