Organized crime in Central America costs billions

Organized crime-related violence cost Central America $6.5 billion, representing a 7.7 percent of the region's $263 billion gross domestic product, according to the latest World Bank study.

The cost of violence in El Salvador is equal to 10 percent of the gross domestic product, followed by Nicaragua, also with 10 percent and Honduras with 9.6 percent.

In Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras, crime is the main factor inhibiting investment.
